Creative Journey - Mad Hatter Printer Tray

Creative Journey - Mad Hatter Printer Tray
Morning Friends,

Today I'm sharing a gift I made for my very sweet friend from Nebraska, Susie (aka Scrap Smart) from scrapbook.com.   Susie and I have become friends over the past few years and last year we were in a swap together.   She made me something so special it really lifted my spirits during a difficult time.   I really wanted to do something nice for her in return.

Susie is very creative, adventurous, fun and loves both simple shabby chic and vintage styles.  When I saw this adventurous Mad Hatter paper collection by Marion Smith, I knew it was perfect for her project.  Susie has been patiently waiting for the weather to warm up so she can paint and decorate her new craft room.   I wanted to do something that she could display, that was fun and would make her smile.  Well, according to her, I succeeded on all accounts, she loves it!  And, that couldn't make me happier!

Here's a few close-ups of Susie's Mad Hatter Printer Tray titled "Creative Journey:"

Metal Flower Cluster, Stencil Work & You Inspire Me Friend Box

Left Side Close Up
There is a place ... & Dream, Discover & Embrace Box

Hanging Trinkets & Vintage Door Knocker Close Up
Little Deeds & Its Always Tea Time Boxes
I'm so happy that Susie loves her fun tray.   I love it too because it silly sayings and whimsy remind me of how the creative process works.  Which is why I titled it "Creative Journey."  Like Alice's big adventures, it makes me smile too.

Well friends that is it for me this morning.  I hope you enjoyed this fun piece.  Thank you for dropping by today.   For those of you who have a few minutes to leave a comment, thank you very much.  I always appreciate hearing from you.   Create something from the heart and make it a special day!   Big Hugs ~ Dawna

Once Upond a Time Layout and Mother's Day Tribute

Hi Friends,

I had such a wonderful Mother's Day this year and created this beautiful layout as a tribute to my mom, Bobbie Jo Wilson.  Now that I'm an empty nester, its usually quiet around here, but all three of my beautiful daughters let me know they were thinking about me.  Each one did something uniquely her own to let me know I was being thought about and I was loved.  What more could a mother ask for than to know the love of her children?

My dear husband, Richard,  started my weekend off with two dozen red roses for me and then drove me to visit my Mom's graveside in our family cemetery.  That probably doesn't sound like the funnest thing to do, but it is a genuine blessing to remember the loved ones who have gone before us.  My mom and I used to go together every year and decorate for her dad, my Grandpa Wilson and as the years went by, the number of flowers bouquets we needed grew also.  Now days my visit includes memories of our Uncle Pete and Aunt Helen, the closest thing to grandparents that either of us ever knew, two cousins and their mom, my Aunt Mary Lou.   Since my mom will always remain with me in spirit, I will carry on our family tradition for the both of us.   Its a tradition that always blesses and warms my heart.

On Sunday, Mother's Day, I planned to take these wonderful vintage pictures of my Mom taken in the early 1950's and do a new layout for my Family Heritage scrapbook.  It had been quite some time since I scrapped a new layout of her and the timing finely felt right to do another one.

I used Marion Smith's Mad Hatter paper collection which is all about Alice in Wonderland.  I can image my mom feeling a bit like Alice, not because she drank potions and went on wild adventures (although my mom had her adventurous side), I imagine that my mom felt a bit like Alice in those early years when she first came to CA as a young girl in love.  Her and my dad, Donnie, left home in their late teens to be together and came here from OK and AZ to start a new life together.   It must of been exciting and I'm sure it was a big adventure for both of them.

As I look at these particular pictures of my mom, its easy for me to see the facial features I favor of hers.  Her arched eyebrow for sure, her smiling eyes, her small 'Wilson' nose, and thinner lips.  About the only facial feature I don't share is the dimple in her chin.  Instead, I have my dad's cheek dimples that show up everytime I smile.

Okay I'll stop boring you with family genes and nostalgia, lets look at a few close ups of and the meaning behind my layout:
Bottom Right Close Up of Once Upon a Time
'Once Upon a Time' is the title of this layout and there are few things to note about this picture that are personal to my mom.  First she absolutely loved the Victorian Era and collected antiques from that period.  She owned a chair so similar to the one pictured, I couldn't resist using it.  Then when it comes to fairy tales, she was an avid reader and even fancied seriously writing at some point later in life.  Never a day went by when she didn't have a book in her hand.  She spent quiet evenings reading for hours and hours as dad quietly watched the television.

As far as techniques go, note that this corner is anchored by one of Prima's resin spiral topiary trees which has been painted gold.  The tree is surrounded by a flower cluster which has been anchored by a gold doily, flowers that have been distressed with Prima's fluid chalk in black coal  and randomly dabbled with molding paste.  You can also see that the 8x8 photo background has been sewn and roughed out with a  Prima distressing tool.  The background papers were treated with a script stencil and molding paste to give the page interest and texture.  I felt bad covering up the beautiful stencil sentiment because it was all about creating beauty in the world around you.
In this bottom left corner you can see Prima's Junk Yard Finds with the vintage 'LOVE' bulb with its wire running through it.  This bulb was a gift from my dear sweet friend Susie Martin and I wanted to include it on this very special layout.  You can see that the script stencil repeats on this side of the page adding more texture to the back ground.  The edges continue to be sewn around the page using various stitches.  They have also been punched around the page using Martha Stewart's tear drop punch.  Next, I used gold ink and Prima's distressing tool to rough up and distress the paper edges.  I matted a double set of black and white pictures, sewed and distressed the edges with Prima's black coal chalker ink.   Notice I added the 'Queen of Hearts' card and as a final touch I used one of Prima's resin heart topiary trees.   I painted the heart tree gold also and created a distressed flower and leaf cluster to anchor it.  I dabbed the flowers and leaves with black chalk ink and molding paste to grunge them up a bit.  Are you feeling the love on this page?
Upper Right Corner Close Up
Here you can see that I used one of Tim Holtz's ornate label plates to put my mom's maiden name, married names, and life span dates.  She went home in her early 60's after a three year battle with pancreatic cancer.  She put up a remarkable fight, but in the end, it would take her home.  A year later, my grandson Cade was born exactly on her birthday!  My Granny (Aunt Helen) used to say that someone had to leave this earth to make room for someone new.  You can't begin to image what a blessing Cade's birth was to all of us!

You can see that the 8x8 center background mat was sewn zig-zag which is one of my favorite techniques to use on layouts. Sewing adds so much interest and I love doing it!  Peeking out from behind the pictures you can see Prima's new Color Bloom Sprays in soft teal, and a resin butterfly painted gold and treated with the new Touch of Luna pens from Zig.  Then, I fussy cut the pink rose, added it to some chipboard, and treated it with several coats of glossy accents.  I popped it up it to give the corner greater dimension and depth. The script stencil work is continued, the gold doily is peeking out and the grunged up sewn, punched, filed and distressed edge work continues along the sides and top of the layout.

The scalloped pocket envelop is a special hiding spot for several 3x4 pictures.   The envelop pocket has been glued between the bottom gold cardstock layer and punched top page.  The envelop has been edged with black coal chalk ink and gold.  I popped up the aqua chipboard button from Webster's Pages to use as a flap closure to hold the pocket flap down in place (thanks for that neat tip Frank <3).   You only need to gently pull it out from underneath the button to open the pocket to find more hidden journaling.   I took one of the 50 cent piece tickets, added an eyelet, jute string and tucked it through the scalloped flap to hide a few more journaling details.  I am loving all the wonderful techniques, hidden photo pockets, and hidden journaling I was able to incorporate into this adventurous layout!
Upper Right Hand Corner Close Up of Once Upon a Time
You can see that the edge work gives way to the wonderful checkered circle which has been distressed with a file, gold inked and zig-zag stitched.  Its been placed like a doily under the 8x8 square toward the upper right hand corner of the layout.  Notice that the clock and flower cluster have been fussy cut, put on chipboard, and treated with layers of glossy accents to highlight the clock.  I popped up the clock and roses to give the corner more depth and dimension.  Just peeking out of the leaves also notice that there is a Prima Junk Yard Find, dripping 'Time' water tap which leaks onto Prima's resin topiary spiral tree just below it.  Again, the topiary tree was  painted gold, so it subtly blends into the flower and leaf cluster that anchors the bottom right side of the page.
Bobbie Jo Wilson - Once Upon a Time Layout by Dawna's Place
Well friends, there you have it!  Did you feel all the love put into this lovely tribute layout for my mom?  And, I bet you learned something about me you never knew too.  Its been a very busy day for me, so I'm going to go put my feet up now.   I'm so excited about this wonderful new layout and look forward to creating a few more in the near future to add to my collection.

Thank you so much for dropping by and hanging in there for a little family story telling and a walk though this lovely layout of my Mom, Bobbie Jo Wilson.  I know she would love it!  Thank you again dear friends, have a wonderful evening and   remember to create from the heart and life your life inspired!  Hugs for all of you ~ Dawna

May Brithday & Friendship Cards

Yvonne's Birthday Card - Front
Hi Friends,

Still catching up with blog post this afternoon, so forgive me if you've already seen these creations.   There were actually three special birthday celebrations in May.   The first two are in our regular Birthday Card Club and those are for  Shana (aka (Dryala) and Yvonne  (aka Euroalien).   The last one is for a my friend Norma (aka Njr007).

All of these ladies are friends I've made over the past few years at scrapbook.com and I have sincerely enjoyed getting to know them.  Its a real blessing to have such talented ladies in my life, they are all very different but I genuinely appreciate their friendship!

So lets start off with my sweet Canadian friend, Shana.  She's a young newlywed who lives in Alberta, her and her dear hubby are just starting out and she adores the color purple.    Here's what I created for her special day:

Next up for our Birthday Club is my sweet Swedish friend Yvonne (aka Euroalien).  Although she's Swedish, she lives here in the US with her dear hubby.  Yvonne celebrated her birthday a bit early this month as she's getting ready to fly out  to see her parents in Sweden.  She loves to travel, enjoys china painting, plays in the swaps and likes the color pink (among other colors).  I all most got a chance to met her irl when she came to Ca. last summer.  She wasn't too far from me, but we just couldn't make the stars line up and connect for us.  Awe ... next visit for sure!   Happy Birthday Yvonne and wishing you safe travels dear friend!   Here's the card I made for Yvonne:

Last, but not least is my friend Norma.  This is one of my favorite cards so far this year, its bright happy colors make me smile.   I met Norma in 2011 while playing along in her Cricut Challenges each month.  Then I went on a challenge hiatus when I joined the design team for Scraputante in 2012.  But Norma and I still cross paths regularly and I'm looking forward to returning to her Cricut Challenges in July.  She is a very talented scrapper, has a beautiful family and just settled into a new home in Texas.  Here's the card I made for Norma's special day:

April Birthday Club

Front of Linny's Tag
Morning Friends,

I'm doing a little  catch-up on my blog today, so please forgive me if you've already seen this creation.  I will explain how I made this lovely tag and provide links to most of the materials, so if you'd like to know about that, feel free to follow along.

This happy birthday tag is for my sweet friend Linny.  She's the kind of friend that always makes you smile, laugh, cry and everything in between.   But mostly, Linny always has something silly to say that reminds me not take myself or life too seriously.  I  love her for that wonderful quality and I'm so grateful to have her friendship!

Linny loves romance and the vintage style so when I saw this wonderful image, I knew it would be perfect for her.  Last month I made my first tag (see Martica's Angel Tag) and I thought I would try my hand at it again for Linny.  I love the way the front turned out and here's a peek at the back.  I did a little experimenting with different stitches on my electronic sewing machine and loved how these stitches turned out:
Back of Linny's Tag

I had a lot of fun creating this tag and kept the steps pretty simple.  To create the base tag, I made a front and back side so I could individually stitch on each side.  I shaped the tops before I started sewing.   I used black cardstock in the middle and trimmed it up so it highlighted the scalloped tag top and gave the tag a nice thin framed look.  The bottom was complimented by adding a green scalloped ribbon at the bottom.  I made sure to glue the scalloped ribbon on the back of one of the tags so when I glued all three layers together it was captured in the middle layers.  I finished off the top with an eyelet and piece of black velvet ribbon.  To embellish the bottom I used black chiffon double ruffled ribbon and ran a rhinestone trim across it to give it a pretty splash of bling!
Front of Linny's Tag

To create the front, I feather stitched around the edges of the vintage image then backed it with pink cardstock.  I finished the edges by distressing them with Prima's chalk edger in black coal.  I slanted the image on the front and anchored the top and bottom corners with a piece of Prima's new medallion lace.  I blackened the lace pieces by spraying them with Prima's color bloom spray, vintage coal misting ink.  Then to anchor the image by creating a flower cluster with a center champagne pink rose, pink Prima botanical flowers, sweetheart blossomwhite rose buds and a few leaves under the flower cluster.  I balanced the top off  by adding a Tim Holtz vintage Parisian metal plate.  And voila, there you have it friends, all done!

I was very happy with how this simple, yet elegant, tag came out.  I was especially pleased that Linny loved getting it!  Thank you for dropping by and having a peek.  If you have an extra minute to leave a comment, I always appreciate hearing from you.  Have a wonderful day and remember,  when create something from the heart you live life inspired!  Dawna ~ <3

Burlap Flower Tutorial

Hi Friend's,

Today I'm very happy to bring you this fun and simple tutorial on how to make these wonderful rustic burlap flowers.  I was inspired to create these beauties from two ladies on YouTube. The first is from alittleshabbychic  and the next is from Cool2Craft. Both tutorials are wonderful and your sure to enjoy them.  I've simply changed up the materials and provided the details I used to create my own unique table centerpiece.

I love to decorate and this spring I'm loving aqua colors and burlap textures.   To get started I collected some existing home decor items like my egg basket, wooden eggs, aqua platter, rustic bird canisters, woven napkin rings, led candle flames and neutral place mats.  I added some woven ribbon, tree sprigs, aqua burlap threads (from the aqua flowers below), and here's what I put together for my new spring center piece:
Spring Table Centerpiece
Look around and see what you've already got to work with, anything I already mentioned, or other items like medium sized frame mirror rather than a platter, or candle stick holders and real candles.  Its fun to mix up a few old  things with a few fresh items to create a totally new look.  Here's a few more close ups:

These flowers are so simple and easy to make!  Here's a close up of all three  types of flowers I created for this display:

4.5" Wide Looped Flat Backed Burlap Flowers #1
1 1/2" Wide Plain Looped Rolled Burlap Flower #2

1 1/2" Wide Rolled Burlap Flower with Center #3
The remainder of this post is dedicated to my flower tutorial.  Feel free to look the directions over,  collect your ideas and goodies.  Then come on back and follow along to create your own unique display. Thank you fro dropping by and may I wish you a happy creative day!   Dawna ~ <3

Burlap Flower Tutorial Directions

Lets start with the supplies you'll need to make both the 4.5" looped flat backed flower and the darker 1 1/2" rolled burlap flower on a stick:
Supplies
2 pieces 30" long x 11" wide 100% Jute Woven Burlap - 1 Roll  cut in half (makes 6 flat back flowers and 6 dark rolled flowers)
6 ea. Large 1/2" Flat Back Pearls
6 ea. Sandwich Sticks (or use wooden skewers or chop sticks, if you want to display in a tall vase)
Glimmer Mist Chocolate (Optional)
2" Circle Punch
Scrap Cardstock
Scrap Felt
Ruler
Tacky Glue
Hot Glue Gun set on Low Temp
Low Temp Glue Sticks
Fabric Scissors
Refer to list as everything needed is not pictured here.
Directions for Burlap Looped Flower #1
5" Wide Looped Burlap Flower #1
Step #1 - Create Felt Flower Base:  After collecting all your supplies, start by creating a felt base for your flowers.  I used a 2" punch to create a paper template, then used the paper template to cut out 6 each 2" felt circles for my flower bases.   I picture both small and larger punches and templates, but didn't need the smaller 1 1/2" one.
Create 6 ea 2" Felt Flower Backs
Step #2 - Prepare Your Strips:  To prepare your burlap, first clena up the edges by pulling uneven frays of burlap till the fabric weave is straight in every direction.  Then at 3.25" pull a single thread from across the length of your fabric.  This will leave a clear straight cut line for you to follow.  Repeat this for both pieces of burlap so you wind up with 6 each 30" lengths.

Step #3 - Create Petal Strips:  To begin creating your petal strips, fold your 3.25" burlap strip in half and using your low temp glue gun, begin gluing your fabric together all the way across your 30" strip.    As shown in the picture below, cut  along the fold between every 5th thread, about 3/4ths of the way to the salvage (glued) edge.  Do not cut all the way through the salvage.   As a final step, scrunch the strips back and forth along the glue line to 'break up or soften' the glue line so its not too stiff to work with as you begin to lay it out around your felt circle.
Step #4 - Create Flat Backed Flower:    Start creating your flower by taking one of your 2" felt backs and starting at the outer edge of the circle moving around the outer edges then moving inward to overlap petal strips, start gluing down your petal strips.  Continue around your circle toward the center until the petal strips overlap themselves for three rows of petals.  For a 2" center circle your strips will end at the center at or about 19" long.   Set aside your 11" remnants for use later.   Snip and glue final petal down near the center leaving a bit of room for your 1/2 center pearl.   Open up the petals by putting your finger through each loop and arranging them individually until you are happy with how they look.    I pulled on the outer sting at each loop to fray them slightly for a more rustic look.  Finish your flower by gluing on a 1/2" pearl center or other desired center piece (i.e., button, rhinestone cluster, bling, trinket).   Your completed flower will look similar to this one:
5" Wide Looped Burlap Flowers with Pearl Center

Directions for Burlap Rolled Flower #2

Step #5 - Color Petal Remnants for Rolled Flowers:  Complete Steps #1 to #3 to get 6 each 11" remnants of looped petal strips.   Using a dark brown colored spray mist saturate your strips.   Then I dried the strips using a hair dryer, set on low, or embossing heat element to dry your stain in just a few minutes.   If you want a more naturalized color variation,  only spray along the salvage edge about 2/3rds the way up the petal.  Once rolled up the darker center will be near the bottom with the lighter end of the petal showing on top.  Since I wanted 3 different colors for my center piece, I saturated my strips instead.

Step #6 - Create Rolled Flowers:  Complete Steps #1, #2,  #3 and #5 to get 6 each 11" stained and dried remnants of looped petal strips.   Using  a sandwich stick glue the larger rounded end down to the salvage (glued edge of your petal strip).  If you plan on using your rolled flowers in a tall vase, you may wish to use a longer heftier stick like a chop stick instead.  Using your low temp glue sticks continue to glue your the salvage edges as you roll your petal strips around the stick until you are finished.  To fluff up simply turn flower face down and rotate it around a for a few twists.  Open up the petals by putting your finger through each loop  and arranging them individually until you are happy with how they look.  Your completed rolled flowers completely misted with stain will look similar to this:
1 1/2" Wide Plain Looped Rolled Burlap Flower
Directions for Aqua Burlap Rolled Flower #3

1 1/2" Wide Rolled Burlap Flower #3
These of course are my favorite ones!  They are so feminine but you do go about putting these ones together slighly diffrent than the others.  First lets start by preparing our flower strips:

Step #7 - Prepare Burlap Strips:  I got this colored burlap at Michael's and its made by Ashland and comes in 3" wide rolls x 5 ft. long.  I cut each roll into three even pieces and ran a edge of tacky glue down along the salvage.    If you'd prefer, you can use your glue gun instead for this step, then you don't need to wait overnight.  I used the tacky glue and let stand overnight.  Here's how things look at this step:

Step #8 - Prepare Burlap Strips:   To make your petal strips you'll need to start at the 3" open unglued edge and start pulling one strand at a time out of the strip.  Strip away all of the strands that run paralled to your glued edge.  You'll wind up with strips that look like this:

Step #9 - Make Petal Strips:   Fold a strand of open weave threads in half and using your low temp glue gun, glue them together along your salvage edge.  Here's what your strips should look like at this point:

Once your strips are together then take one and lay your sandwich stick (or chop stick if you want to use in a tall vase) along the edge and start gluing and rolling the edges around the stick.  Be sure to keep you salvages even as you rotate the petal strip around the stick.

When your rolled petal is done, gently lay it face down onto the table and give it a soft twirl to unfurl the loops a bit.  This will give you a small center spot to glue your finishing pearl in place.   This is what they should look like when your all done:
Again here's a close up what my finished flowers all looked like put together as a spring centerpiece:

Well friends that's it for me today.  I hope you found this step by step tutorial helpful.   Create something from the heart and live your life inspired!  Have a happy day dear friends!  ~ Hugs Dawna
